A TFN is your unique tax identifier — you'll need one within 28 days of starting work. Apply online at the ATO website (ato.gov.au) or in person at a tax office. Processing takes 7-14 business days. Without a TFN, your employer must withhold tax at the highest rate (45%).
Tax & Superannuation
Updated 2026-Q1Getting a Tax File Number (TFN)
You can apply for a TFN online using your student visa grant number. Many universities help students with TFN applications during orientation week.
Working holiday makers (subclass 417/462) are taxed at 15% on the first $45,000 earned, then at marginal rates above that. This is different from resident tax rates.
Understanding superannuation
Superannuation (super) is Australia's retirement savings system. Your employer must contribute 11.5% of your salary into a super fund. You can choose your own fund or use your employer's default fund. Major funds include AustralianSuper, REST, Hostplus, and Sunsuper.
If you leave Australia permanently, you may be able to claim your super as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP). Tax rates on DASP are 35% for working holiday visa holders and 65% for others.
Filing your tax return
The Australian financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June. Tax returns are due by 31 October (or later if you use a registered tax agent). You can file online for free using myTax through your myGov account. Most newcomers get a refund — especially if tax was withheld at a higher rate before you had a TFN.
