Bringing pets to Australia

Australia has strict biosecurity and quarantine requirements for importing animals. Only cats and dogs from approved countries can be imported. The process takes at least 6 months and includes vaccinations, blood tests, import permits, and 10 days of government quarantine in Melbourne (Mickleham facility). Budget $5,000-$15,000 for the entire process.

Adopting a pet locally

Local adoption is much simpler. RSPCA, Animal Welfare League, and PetRescue.com.au list animals available for adoption. Adoption fees range from $200-$500 and typically include desexing, vaccination, and microchipping. Many rescue organisations will check your rental agreement allows pets.

Pet registration and laws

All cats and dogs must be registered with your local council and microchipped. Registration costs $30-$150/year (discounted for desexed pets). Dogs must be on-leash in public unless in a designated off-leash area. Most rental properties now allow pets under national tenancy law changes, though landlords can set reasonable conditions.
