Government Services

Updated 2026-Q1

Setting up myGov

myGov is your central portal for Australian government services. Create an account at my.gov.au and link services like Medicare, ATO (tax), and Centrelink. You'll need to verify your identity — this may require attending a service centre if you don't have Australian documents yet.

Centrelink and social services

Centrelink provides social security payments and support. Eligibility depends on your visa status and residency requirements. Permanent residents may access some payments after a waiting period (typically 1-4 years). Services include JobSeeker, Family Tax Benefit, and Medicare. Visit a Centrelink office or apply through myGov.

Temporary visa holders

Most temporary visa holders are NOT eligible for Centrelink payments. There are some limited crisis payments available in exceptional circumstances.

Other essential registrations

Electoral enrollment is compulsory for Australian citizens (and some permanent residents). Proof of Age card is available from state transport authorities if you don't drive. Births, Deaths, and Marriages registry handles name changes and document registration.
