Seasons in Australia are the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere: Summer is December-February, Autumn is March-May, Winter is June-August, Spring is September-November. The climate varies enormously — from tropical in the north to temperate in the south.

Updated 2026-Q1Understanding Australian seasons
Sun safety
Australia has some of the highest UV radiation levels in the world. Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen (SPF50+), Slap on a hat, Seek shade, and Slide on sunglasses. The UV index is regularly above 11 (extreme) in summer. Sunburn can occur in as little as 11 minutes. This is not optional — skin cancer rates in Australia are among the highest globally.
Building your wardrobe
Kmart and Target offer affordable basics. Cotton On is a popular Australian brand for casual clothing. For work attire, try H&M, Uniqlo, or Myer department stores. Op shops (charity shops) are excellent for affordable second-hand clothing. Consider buying season-end sales for significant discounts at major retailers.
